Downtown Kirkland gets the summer press. The Marina Park concert series, the new sourdough menu at Von's on Park Lane, the Nardone family's Rimini on the waterfront. If you live in Juanita, Grasslawn, North Rose Hill, or the blocks around Totem Lake, that coverage is not really about your week.
Your week has a different center of gravity. It runs Friday afternoon at Juanita Beach Park, occasionally spills over to Heritage Park on a Saturday night, and now, for the first time in a while, it has real food anchors going up on your side of NE 116th. This is a map of August 2026 written for people who already live up here.
The Friday anchor most downtown guides skip
The Wednesday farmers market at Marina Park gets the tourists. The Juanita Friday Market gets the neighborhood. It operates every Friday, June 5 to September 25, from 3 to 7 p.m., at Juanita Beach Park at 9703 NE Juanita Dr. That means five Fridays in August: the 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th, with no holiday closures left on the calendar.
Scale matters here. Since 2007, the market has been at the heart of the community, drawing more than 20,000 visitors each summer to a park most of you can walk or bike to. Roughly 50 vendors are on site each Friday, from produce to fresh-cut flowers to prepared food. The load-in window is staged, so if you show up right at 3 p.m. the stalls are already set and the food trucks are hot.
The distinction between the Wednesday and Friday markets is worth internalizing if you have not been paying attention. Wednesday is a shopping errand next to a downtown pier. Friday is the start of your weekend, on the north shore, with a playground and a boardwalk attached. Same city, different rituals.
The two movie nights that split August
Two outdoor movies bracket the middle of the month, and residents routinely conflate them.
The first is at Juanita Beach Park itself: Outdoor Summer Movies in the Park on Saturday, August 1, starting around 6 p.m. If you already came for the Friday market on July 31, the screen is essentially in the same place the next night.
The second is a mile inland at Heritage Park in Rose Hill: Kirkland Community Movie Night at Heritage Park on August 15. Heritage sits at the top of the hill above downtown and reads as a different neighborhood entirely. If you live in North Rose Hill or near Grasslawn, it is closer to you than the beach is.
The practical read: if you have small kids and want the water and the playground, aim for August 1. If you want the picnic-blanket-on-a-lawn version with a shorter drive from the east side of the freeway, aim for August 15.
What Kirkland Urban stacks on the same nights
The Village at Totem Lake and Kirkland Urban are two different properties, and the north-side calendar in August leans on the Urban side of the split. Three dates to know:
- Tuesday, August 11 — Umbrella Fringe Festival at Kirkland Urban, per the Kirkland Urban events calendar listing the Fringe on that date and Sunset Markets + Concert Nights on August 20.
- Saturday, August 15 — 15th Anniversary of Ryan James Fine Arts, the long-running gallery that has anchored the Urban plaza since it opened, on the same Kirkland Urban schedule.
- Thursday, August 20 — Sunset Markets + Concert Nights, starting at 4 p.m. at 425 Urban Plaza, per the concert listing that places the Sunset Markets series at that address and start time.
For downtown counter-programming on the same axis, the Kirkland Summer Concert Series brings The Hipsters to the Marina Park Pavilion on Thursday, August 6 at 7 p.m., and the broader concert series runs from late June through September 11 at Marina Park.
If you live in the Totem Lake apartments or the townhomes off 124th, the Urban events are a short walk. The Marina Park show is a fifteen-minute drive with parking that gets ugly after 6 p.m. Pick accordingly.
The food map is finally shifting north
This is the part of the August story residents actually care about, because it changes what your Friday looks like for the next several years.
Downtown got the marquee openings first. Tanaka Ramen & Izakaya opened in late January 2026 in the former Island Soul / Arleana's space, the company's first restaurant in Washington. Von's 1000Spirits opened its Kirkland location on June 10 at 115 Park Lane in the former Feast space. Rimini, the Nardones' new Italian room, took a downtown waterfront spot.
The north side is what changed this year. Two openings matter for anyone above NE 85th:
Lime Social at the Village at Totem Lake. Ethan Stowell announced Lime Social, a Mexican restaurant in Kirkland's Village at Totem Lake, following his departure from Ethan Stowell Restaurants. That drops a chef-driven concept directly onto the pad next to Cinemark, Whole Foods, and Trader Joe's, which is a different kind of anchor than the Village has had.
Farine Bakery & Cafe for Grasslawn. The team's Kirkland announcement follows Farine's March 2026 Woodinville debut, with construction expected to begin in late 2026. The site was picked with the neighborhood explicitly in mind. The company framed it as a location to serve customers going to Grasslawn Park for kids' soccer, hiking or walking the trails, or commuting. The Farine team already runs locations in Redmond and Bellevue, and the menu leans French and Belgian with breads and pastries made in-house. This is the kind of daily-use bakery Grasslawn has never had within walking distance.
The read for a north-Kirkland resident is straightforward. Until this year, if you wanted a chef-run dinner or a serious pastry counter, you drove to downtown Kirkland or over to Redmond and Bellevue. Starting this summer, and finishing sometime in 2027 when Farine opens, that trip gets shorter.
A north-Kirkland August, mapped by day
For anyone who wants the whole month on one screen:
| Day | Where | What |
|---|---|---|
| Sat, Aug 1 | Juanita Beach Park | Outdoor Summer Movies in the Park, 6 p.m. |
| Thu, Aug 6 | Marina Park Pavilion | The Hipsters, Kirkland Summer Concert Series, 7 p.m. |
| Fri, Aug 7 | Juanita Beach Park | Juanita Friday Market, 3–7 p.m. |
| Tue, Aug 11 | Kirkland Urban | Umbrella Fringe Festival |
| Fri, Aug 14 | Juanita Beach Park | Juanita Friday Market, 3–7 p.m. |
| Sat, Aug 15 | Heritage Park | Kirkland Community Movie Night, 5 p.m. |
| Sat, Aug 15 | Kirkland Urban | Ryan James Fine Arts 15th Anniversary |
| Thu, Aug 20 | 425 Urban Plaza | Sunset Markets + Concert Nights Series, 4 p.m. |
| Fri, Aug 21 | Juanita Beach Park | Juanita Friday Market, 3–7 p.m. |
| Fri, Aug 28 | Juanita Beach Park | Juanita Friday Market, 3–7 p.m. |
Five of the ten dated events on this list sit north of NE 85th. That ratio is new. A year ago most of the calendar was pinned to Marina Park and Park Lane.
The point most guides miss
The received wisdom on Kirkland summers reads roughly the same on every site: Marina Park concerts on Thursdays, Uncorked and Summerfest as the two big weekends, waterfront dinners in between. That version is accurate for people passing through. It is not the version that describes what a Juanita or Totem Lake resident actually does with their August.
The Friday market at Juanita Beach is the real weekly ritual on the north side. The two outdoor movies genuinely split the neighborhoods that would drive to each one. Kirkland Urban is stacking enough Thursday and Saturday programming that you can plan a walking evening without leaving the plaza. And the food geography that used to force you downtown or across the freeway is finally moving toward you, first with Lime Social in the Village and then with Farine coming to Grasslawn.
If you are a north-Kirkland homeowner, this is what your neighborhood is turning into while everyone else writes about the waterfront. Worth knowing before you decide whether it is time to move, remodel, or just clear the calendar for a few Fridays.
